. I try to reconstruct the ways in which we provide service: First phase: respond to the person asking the group to which the relative was affiliated. The groups "named" were in order: Jehovah's Witnesses, Scientology, Neocatechumenal, Soka Gakkai, Opus Dei, where groups of different matrix are practiced various forms of meditation, etc..
Second phase: once clarified what was the group charged with looking in-depth news on it by drawing on critical sources of various origins, but still, always and only sources
criticism.
In the world of associations that offer assistance in this field are convinced (and I was) what sociologists describe groups that provide no value judgments or expressing a positive for them, or make unnecessary work, worse, harmful. Reading their publications is to lose valuable time, however should be used to help people.
Using an 'image to describe this attitude: a person realizes someone drowning and moves immediately to help her. The urgency to save life does not allow the victim to the "savior" to get to spend time listening to an observer, from afar, he realizes what is happening and shouts excitedly to explain that to grab the person behind them to bring it to shore. The fact is that by refusing to listen for a moment, the "savior" drown with the other because, instead of taking the back, and grabs him before he is dragged down.
I think the metaphor is clear.
Scholars "theorists" who toyed with their statistics or to be ignored or, better still, torn. Everything can and should be done except to read what they write and seek an open confrontation with them. I remember that I was advised not to talk to these people because "they
could be confusing. "And I, initially, I agreed and followed this advice.
The other source that is used is that of the seven same. You read that their books and their publications. Reading is being done to better understand the aberrations in the group practiced and spread his doctrine. This is a reading "Wizard" from a viewpoint that is already defined and, as you read, you use only what confirms the data now certain about the dangers of the cult.
Stage Three: Once you have gathered the information sent to the person who called clarifying you need to know about the doctrine and practices of the sect in question.
Since the information I gave came from sources "against" and then, perhaps, who tended to spread a little to "emphasize" things, the effect they produced in the relative concerned was disruptive: if the first had only
some doubt and anxiety was now beginning to really get scared. At that point, the question I was given was always the same. " But if this is so, then my son (husband, brother, sister, friend, etc..) Is in danger. What can I do to get it out? "
Fourth phase
: attempt to "free the victim." I counseled the family to offer the family an interview, but this, in almost all cases, it was not possible because the adept would never have agreed to talk with me or with someone else who wanted to convince him to abandon his group.
Fifth phase: recommendations to be implemented temporarily to avoid worsening the situation. One trick that always advise was to avoid direct confrontation with the relative dialogue ensnared and groped on his experience to try to understand all the reasons.
The idea was that if the follower had not severed relations with his family, could not be easier for him to understand and leave the sect, although after a long time. In any case meant direct confrontation finally sever ties with the family and therefore was avoided.
In this way you could pass the time during which families also telephoned daily to seek guidance on how to deal with the familiar "brainwashed", what to avoid, etc. encouraging thing.
Sixth stage: so they could spend months or even years, but always came the day when I was asked this question: "
I did everything I was advised. My son is always in the sect . Is it possible that something can be done? "
remember those phone calls, and those meetings as a thorn in the side along with the feeling of helplessness when I force myself to say:" You can not force anyone to do what it wants to do. More than this I can not tell. " At this point it happened to me several times that the parent asked me who the deprogrammers
and if, in Italy, there were people doing this" job ".
The call or the interview ended after explaining that the activities of deprogrammers are illegal and as far as I know (and I still hope it is) in Italy there were none.
I remember that I spent hours on the phone trying to reassure and give hope to people who believe they have lost their loved one forever in a cult. Those talks, often heartbreaking really, reinforced in me the '
aversion to all these groups and their leaders who did so much harm to vulnerable people.
After a "placement" of a couple of years and dozens of phone calls ended in this way, I began seriously to think that the only solution, in front of so many cases of psychological abuse perpetrated within sectarian groups, was to reintroduce the crime of plagiarism
abolished by the Constitutional Court in 1981.
This belief was based on
axioms: a) the information provided by the person who asks for help, and certainly are more reliable
b) the joint stumbled into the cult has changed and rejects his family and his old friends because of the sect that controls its behavior , his emotions, the information it receives and also his way of thinking (my "masters" were Steve Hassan and Margaret Singer)
c) the seven religious groups are (or are presented as such) that they aim to seduce the innocent and unsuspecting people
d) once the person has been primed with the ruse is mentally conditioned by slowly leader and the group to leave its target group and make his new family sect
s) in the sect, the person loses his freedom of choice and its willingness to act reasonably
f ) because there is no abuse bigger than the other to remove the freedom and rationality, the solution lies in punishing these actions vigorously through the establishment of an ad hoc
crime.
What was wrong with this "theorem"?
And what they were dealing with all this Catholic groups like Opus Dei and Neocatechumenal?
Appointment the next "step".
